Capitoline Museums Wheelchair Accessible Tours
Capitoline Museums wheelchair accessible tours, form a complex of buildings that make up the main civic museum in Rome.
It covers an exhibition area of almost 13,000 sqm and preserves an artistic and historical heritage of immense value and is among the best known museums in the world.
The historical site was established in Palazzo dei Conservatori and in Palazzo Nuovo.
The two buildings are located in Piazza del Campidoglio ( Capitoline Hill ) renovated following the design of Michelangelo and are joined by the Lapidary Gallery, an underpass that crosses Piazza del Campidoglio without leaving the museums.
Its origin is in fact dated 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV donated some bronze sculptures to the citizens, laying the foundations for what is now considered one of the finest collections of classical art.
Most of the works come from the city of Rome.
Touring Capitoline Hill
Before going up to visit the actual collection, stop to admire the marble fragments scattered around the courtyard.
The head, hand and gigantic foot were part of the statue of the Emperor Constantine.
A 12 meters high sculpture, once placed in the Basilica of Maxentius, in the Roman Forum.
Within their walls you will find both ancient works, dating back to Ancient Rome, and paintings by great European painters.
The wheelchair accessible guided tours of the Capitoline Museums will lead you to the foot of the famous bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the only equestrian statue preserved in Rome.
The tour will continue with other rare bronze masterpieces, from the Hercules of the Forum Boarium to the head of the Emperor Constantine, from the mythical Capitoline Wolf to the portrait of Giunio Brutus, the founding hero of the republic.
The wheelchair accessible guided tour of the Capitoline Museums will help you better understand the real nature of power in ancient Rome and the artistic taste of the Roman aristocracy.
By observing the artistic masterpieces of the collections, stories and legends related to divinities, emperors and symbols of the greatness of Rome will relive.
If you find yourself in the Eternal City for a few days, or even just for a weekend, we advise you to add them to your program, you will not be absolutely disappointed!
