Navona Square, the most beautiful baroque square of Rome, occupying the runway of the old Stadium of Domitian or Circus Agonalis, which has perfectly preserved the arena elongated rectangular shape.

The Stadium was built by Emperor Domitian perhaps already before 86 AD to serve the Greek athletic games he particularly appreciated, but the Romans did not like, considering them immoral.

The life of the square began, however, only in the second half of the XV century.

It was transferred here the market for several years was held on the Market Square, becoming a fixed point of sale of vegetables, meat and other goods.

Market place and meeting place, the square also became the site of festivals and processions, especially since it had been regularized and bricked in 1485.

It was essential, for the improvement and the ornament of the square, Pope Gregory XIII, which he brought three fountains, including a watering hole, serving the market and pack animals who flocked there.

XVII century, with the renovation ordered by Pope Innocent X, Navona Square only maintained its old perimeter and completely changed appearance.

Touring Navona Square

Today among the palaces built by Pope Innocent X hand, are included Pamphili Palace and the Church of St Agnes, the construction of which is due to Borromini.

At the sides and at the center of the square you can admire the three fountains that characterize Piazza Navona.

The most important is placed in front of the facade of Church of St Agnes.

The Fountain of the Four Rivers, in which four statues representing the four rivers are carved at the time considered the most important: the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges and the Rio de la Plata.

The work of the fountain were made by Bernini, Borromini's bitter rival.

In fact, one of the statues, that of the Danube, carved right in front of the Church of St Agnes, with his hand raised to protect themselves from the danger of the "collapse" of the church dedicated to St Agnes, by Borromini.
