St Peter In Chains Basilica Wheelchair Accessible Tours
The of St Peter in Chains Basilica or St Pietro in Vincoli, is located on the Oppio Hill, in the Monti district.
The first early Christian basilica, built on the remains of previous constructions, perished in a short time and was rebuilt under the pontificate of Sixtus III in 439.
Is also called the Eudoxian Basilica, from the name of its founder, Licinia Eudoxia.
Daughter of the Eastern Emperor Theodosius II and wife of the Western Emperor Valentinian III.
Tradition has it that the young empress wanted to give the then reigning Pope the chains that had bound Peter during his imprisonment in Jerusalem.
Initially the basilica was dedicated to the Apostles but soon the affirmation of the cult of the chains ( vincula ) kept there transformed its name.
The area is characterised by important archaeological complexes, and presents a complex stratification of construction phases.
Touring St Peter In Chains Basilica
The magnificent tomb of Julius II, to which Michelangelo dedicated forty years of laborious work, from 1505 to 1545, is his most representative work.
The monument, leaning against the south wall of the transept, is the definitive and simplified version of a much larger project.
Initially intended for the Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican, which the artist worked on several times, also with the contribution of assistants.
It constitutes a unique and significant example of Michelangelo's tormented artistic and intellectual career.
The restorations carried out between 1999 and 2003, and most recently in 2016, have made it possible to distinguish the second thoughts.
Parts modified by the Master and to carry out a critical re-examination of the construction history of the monument in the architectural context of the church.
The guided tour of the church of St Peter in Chains will be an unforgettable experience.
Will immerse you in one of the churches richest in art and history in Rome and will give us the thrill of seeing one of Michelangelo's immortal sculptures in person.
